Understanding Tax Deductions for Contractors
As a self-employed contractor, you are responsible for your own tax obligations — including income tax and, in most countries, self-employment or national insurance contributions. The good news is that you can deduct legitimate business expenses from your taxable income, significantly reducing what you owe.
Many contractors overpay taxes simply because they do not track all deductible expenses throughout the year. This calculator helps you estimate your potential savings so you know what to discuss with your accountant.
Top Deduction Categories
- Vehicle & Mileage: Every mile driven for work is deductible using the standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses. For most contractors, this is the single largest deduction.
- Tools & Equipment: Hand tools, power tools, ladders, and trade-specific equipment are fully deductible in the year of purchase (subject to country rules on capital allowances vs. immediate expensing).
- Business Insurance: General liability, professional indemnity, and vehicle insurance premiums paid for business purposes are deductible.
- Marketing & Advertising: Website hosting, Google Ads, social media promotion, business cards, and any other costs to attract customers are deductible.
- Professional Development: Trade certifications, continuing education, and industry memberships are deductible as business expenses.
- Phone & Internet: The business-use percentage of your phone plan and home internet are deductible. Keep records of how you calculated the business-use portion.
- Home Office: If you use a dedicated space exclusively for business (estimating, admin, scheduling), a proportional share of rent, utilities, or mortgage interest may be deductible.
Deduction Tips by Country
🇺🇸 United States
File Schedule C with your 1040. The standard mileage rate for 2026 is $0.70/mile. You can deduct the self-employment tax deduction (50% of SE tax), health insurance premiums, and contributions to a SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k). Consider Section 179 for immediate expensing of equipment.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom
Complete a Self Assessment tax return each year. HMRC allows £0.45/mile for the first 10,000 miles (then £0.25). The Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) lets you expense qualifying equipment immediately. Class 4 NICs are payable on profits above the lower profits limit.
🇦🇺 Australia
Lodge a tax return with the ATO. The cents per kilometre method uses $0.88/km (2024–25 rate). The instant asset write-off threshold allows small businesses to immediately deduct eligible depreciating assets. Keep a logbook for vehicle deductions.
🇨🇦 Canada
File a T1 return with a T2125 (Statement of Business Activities). CRA vehicle rates vary by province (~$0.70/km for the first 5,000 km). Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions are required on self-employment income. You can deduct GST/HST paid on business expenses.
Self-Employment Tax
Unlike employees, self-employed contractors pay both the employee and employer portions of payroll taxes. In the US this is 15.3% on net self-employment income (Social Security and Medicare). In the UK you pay Class 2 and Class 4 NICs. In Australia you pay the Medicare Levy. In Canada you pay both the employee and employer CPP contributions. These obligations make deductions even more valuable — every dollar of deductions reduces both your income tax and self-employment tax bill.
Use this calculator to estimate your potential savings, then work with a qualified tax professional to ensure every legitimate deduction is captured before you file.
